The name of American author Katherine Paterson is widely known outside the United States. Her literary mastery has been recognized by a vast number of international and national awards in the field of children's literature, including the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and two Newbery Medals. The author finds the courage to speak about such "uncomfortable" topics as pain, misunderstanding, loneliness, and even death. Paterson's stories do not always have a happy ending, but they are always imbued with hope. It is precisely these kinds of books that help a young person grow up.
Ten-year-old Jesse Aarons is a great artist, but very few people know it. His parents are barely making ends meet—they have no time for their son’s fantasies—and if his sisters find out, they will start teasing him relentlessly. But then, one day, Jesse gets a new neighbor: a girl his age named Leslie Burke. She is not at all like his other classmates; she dresses strangely and doesn't even have a television. But she knows a ton of different stories, and you can talk to her about anything. You can even go with her to a magical kingdom—Terabithia…
This poignant and wise book is about the courage to be yourself and about how a difficult loss helps one become stronger and find one's own path. In 1978, Katherine Paterson was awarded the most prestigious U.S. prize in children's literature, the Newbery Medal, for the novel "Bridge to Terabithia."
