Uncle Montague lives in an old, strange house beyond the woods, and the only thing that disrupts his solitude is his nephew's visits. It is to him that the uncle tells his scary stories, which are either made up or actually happened to the uncle himself when he was younger. The more details we learn, the more we are inclined to think that all the characters really existed, and all the stories are based on real events.
Here is what the author himself says about the book:
"Tales of Terror" are collections of short, creepy stories, and each book has its own storyteller. As we read, we gradually learn something about the storyteller themselves, as well as their listeners. Each of the books is set in the past - the Victorian and Edwardian eras, which are the setting for many classic English ghost stories."
