American writer, satirist, journalist, and artist Kurt Vonnegut is a cult figure in 20th-century literature.
- Vonnegut’s creative style combines caustic satire, philosophy, science fiction, the grotesque, and black humor. "Cat's Cradle". A brilliant scientist, who once took part in the creation of the atomic bomb, presents humanity with another "gift" in his later years – a wonder substance codenamed ice-nine. A single tiny fragment is enough to trigger an uncontrollable reaction that freezes water even in the heat of summer. The military department considers the invention very promising – after all, heavy equipment will now be able to easily move across swampy jungle terrain. And it would all be fine, if not for the fact that it threatens to turn the Earth into a ball of ice… "The Sirens of Titan"
If your world is unfree by definition... If your life obeys mathematical calculations... If humiliation has become the norm, and the crunch of human bones under the wheels of the state machine is simply no longer heard by anyone because of how commonplace it is... And what is this "if"? A dystopia — or a "prosperous society"? Everyone decides for themselves whether they are a slave or a free person!
