It very often seems to parents that children get upset over trifles. You didn't manage to press the elevator button first? You'll press it next time. A cup with a pony broke? No big deal, we'll buy a new one. In our eagerness to cheer the child up, we often invalidate their feelings, yet for them, every incident is important, every disruption of a plan is a catastrophe of global proportions. Our job as parents is to support our child and show them how to cope with disappointment, distress, and anger. And at the same time, to inspire them to look for solutions in difficult situations. Connie's day didn't start off well: dad's cup broke, her ice cream fell right into a puddle, and the cat scratched her favorite teddy bear. Anyone would be upset in such a situation. But Connie didn't stay sad for long because her parents were nearby, ready to listen to her, comfort her, and help solve the problem.
