By 1793, the painter Francisco Goya had achieved unprecedented success. Behind him lay a long and arduous journey — from the threshold of his family home in the village of Fuendetodos to the Palace of Alba and even the Royal Palace — but Goya had successfully navigated it. And now, as he, once just little Francho and now a court painter, *pintor de cámara*, paints portraits of these high-born ladies and gentlemen, it is unclear who is honoring whom — they him, or he them…

The novel "Goya: or the Hard Way to Enlightenment" holds a special place in the work of Lion Feuchtwanger and is perhaps the writer's most famous piece. Initially conceived in 1943, the novel about the Spanish artist Goya y Lucientes was not published until 1951. Seven years — a record time for Feuchtwanger — were required to create this exceptional biographical novel, which remains an unsurpassed example of the genre to this day.

In this edition, the famous novel is published for the first time in a new translation by Roman Eyvadis.
