The Fox and the Wolf
The usual price $14.95All over the world there are so-called "fox tales," which tell of a cunning, devious animal that gets the better of stronger beasts—the wolf and the bear.
In the Russian folk tale "The Fox and the Wolf," the red-haired trickster easily deceives a simple-minded peasant and steals his fish; she teaches a foolish wolf to catch fish in an ice hole with his tail; and after smearing herself with dough, she forces the wolf, who was beaten because of her, to carry her on his back. Everything is just like in real life: the Fox, an experienced manipulator, is always happy to profit at the expense of gullible and ignorant characters.
It is not surprising that some expressions from this tale have become proverbial:
"Freeze, freeze, wolf tail";
"The beaten gives the unbeaten a ride."
Thanks to the tale, a child understands: a self-serving lie, no matter how implausible or incredible it may seem (catching fish with a tail!), will always find a fool who believes it. With the help of adults, a little one will draw another useful conclusion: in difficult life situations, it is not strength that saves the day, but wit and resourcefulness.
The book's illustrator, the wonderful artist Nikolai Ustinov, is characterized by a subtle understanding of the text and a special perception of the child's world. His memorable drawings form a single whole with the plot of the tale; they awaken a child's imagination and invite them to look at and read the book again and again.
Recommended for reading by adults to children.
