The story of Lyudmila Nikolskaya tells about several days in the life of the girl Maya. But what are these days! Winter of 1941, cold, hunger, death and meanness reign in besieged Leningrad. And Maya is only 11 years old, and she remains a child even in this monstrous time. Lyudmila Nikolskaya, who herself survived the blockade, writes primarily about life, no matter how terrible it may be. Maya argues with her mother, laughs with the neighbor boy, warms up a homeless kitten, takes care of her neighbors and continues to live with all her might. The artist Anatoly Slepkov, a recognized classic of Soviet and Russian book illustration, created a whole gallery of images that fully reflect the inhabitants of besieged Leningrad and the belief that the city will become alive.
