The author of this book is the eminent Russian literary scholar, Doctor of Philology Marietta Omarovna Chudakova (1937–2021). "A Biography of Mikhail Bulgakov" was first published in 1988, presenting the writer's life in such a consistent and comprehensive manner for the first time. Readers were given the opportunity to acquaint themselves with archival documents, testimonies from people who surrounded the writer, and fragments of his diaries and letters (at that time still unpublished)—and, most importantly, to appreciate the true scale of Bulgakov's personality, free from the gloss of censorship and ideological omissions. Today, it is hard to even imagine the labor it took for M. O. Chudakova to gather all the factual material we have at our disposal today.
To this day, this book remains the most authoritative study of Bulgakov's biography. It was translated into other languages, but M. O. Chudakova turned down numerous offers to republish it in Russian: she hoped to prepare a revised version of the text, but did not live to do so. Nevertheless, this edition incorporates the author's own corrections preserved in a copy from the Chudakov family's private library.
The book includes an insert with illustrations.
