The book "The Pebble Game" was originally published in the Yakut language. One day, a little girl named Nulgynet saw a very tiny person and wondered: why is he so short? "He’s just a child, exactly like you!" her mother laughed. But how was the little girl to know that other children existed in the world? She is the only one for miles around — the nearest village is a day’s journey away by sled!
The name Nulgynet means "born during a migration," and she lives with a reindeer herder brigade in the Yakut tundra. A chocolate candy or a rubber ball are curiosities from the "big world" to her, but she isn’t afraid of wolves and once helped heal an injured eagle. Nulgynet learned to ride a reindeer before she learned to read or write, and her favorite toys, colorful stones, can turn into anything from wild animals to houses or treasures.
The girl seems like a character from the "Mountain of Gems" animated series: she seems just as unreal, and her life just as magical. But believe it or not, the stories collected under this cover are not fairy tales at all, but the memories of the grown-up Nulgynet! Her name is Maria Prokopyevna Fedotova; she is an experienced educator and a popular children's author in the Far East whose books are published in three languages: Yakut, Even, and Russian.
