In ancient times, when the world was not the same as it is now, it was easy to meet giants, dwarfs and wizards on earth. The son of the mighty king Kiloh easily wooed the beautiful Olwen, the daughter of a giant. The elves invited mere mortals to stay in their lands. Animals and birds helped people in trouble, and if misfortune overtook them themselves, they hurried to the cave of the sorcerer Merlin.
The gods also often descended to earth from heaven. Among them were the gods of proud warlike tribes - the Celts and the Germans, who settled almost throughout Europe. Writer Leonid Yakhnin helped young readers to understand the intricacies of the epic of these peoples, and artist Igor Oleinikov created slightly ironic images of celestials and heroes.
