The main characters of this book are Tiltil and Mitil, the children of a poor woodcutter. On Christmas Eve, an old woman comes to them and asks them to go in search of the Blue Bird. The old woman's granddaughter is sick - and only a wonderful bird that brings happiness can restore her health. Tiltil and Mitil agree, and then the old woman suddenly turns into a fairy, all objects come to life, and pets gain the gift of speech. Together with the faithful dog Tilo and the cunning cat Tiletta, as well as the revived Bread, Sugar, Water and Fire, the children go on an amazing journey. They will need all the courage, dexterity and ingenuity, but most importantly - kindness and sensitivity to find a bird of happiness and give it to a sick girl.
