On Christmas Eve, the fairy Berylune appears in a poor woodcutter's hut. She asks the woodcutter's children, Tyltyl and his sister Mytyl, to set off in search of the Blue Bird to save her sick granddaughter. The fairy gives the children a magic diamond that allows them to see the hidden essence of things. Their pets begin to speak, and inanimate objects — Fire, Water, Bread, Milk, and the Clock — come to life and join the children on an amazing journey led by the Soul of Light. In their search for the Blue Bird, the heroes visit the Land of Memory, the Palace of Night, the Forest, the Graveyard, the Gardens of Happiness, and the Kingdom of the Future. To help the sick girl recover, they must overcome many obstacles and even risk their lives.
B.A. Dekhterev, faithful to classical traditions, always paid special attention to detail. That is why the children, the fairy Berylune, and all the characters are both so realistic and magical. These wonderful illustrations help young readers understand the deep moral meaning of this fairy-tale parable: after overcoming all the challenges, Tyltyl and Mytyl discover a very important truth — happiness should not be sought far away, it may be right beside you; one only needs to learn to see the essence of things.
This book will make a wonderful Christmas or New Year's gift for any child, boy or girl. Delight your children! Give them a world of wonder and magic!
