“Mirgorod” is a collection of stories that shows how the familiar way of life is cracking at the seams. Here, Gogol depicted a world where anxiety hides behind laughter. In “Mirgorod,” peace and storms coexist side by side: the idyllic “Old-World Landowners” and the tragedy of “Taras Bulba,” the mystical horror of “Viy,” and the absurd quarrel between Ivan Ivanovich and Ivan Nikiforovich. These stories gradually lead to a sense of loss, leaving nothing behind but regret: “It is dull in this world, gentlemen!”
