Nikolai Gogol: Taras Bulba
The usual price $49.95 The heroes of N. Gogol's story "Taras Bulba" are brave Cossacks-Cossacks. Together they make up the Zaporozhye brotherhood - a close-knit unity of people for whom "there are no ties holier than fellowship" and there is no "more glorious death" than in the war - "for a holy and Christian cause." This topic was singled out as the main one, brilliantly realized in drawings, by People's Artist of the USSR Alexander Gerasimov. In the history of illustrating Gogol's story, this was the first fundamental attempt to express it as a national epic, the hero of which is the people.
A. Gerasimov worked on illustrating "Taras Bulba" for a total of forty years. During this time - in different techniques and in different color palettes - he created hundreds of sheets expressing the violent, impulsive Cossack soul. In 1953, the artist selected works for publication in a book as illustrations. This illustrative series is reproduced in the present edition; it is supplemented by works published for the first time.
