Oleg Kuvaev: Territory
The usual price $9.95Oleg Mikhailovich Kuvaev (1934–1975) was a polar geologist, geophysicist, writer, and traveler who undertook several highly challenging solo expeditions, including those in search of the legendary "Silver Mountain" and a semi-mythical bear in the remote valleys of the Anadyr Highlands. The novel *Territory* is Kuvaev's most famous work, which has seen dozens of editions, been adapted for the screen twice, and translated into many languages. Prospecting for industrial gold in Chukotka in the 1950s is just one of the novel's themes. Moreover, the word "Chukotka" is not mentioned even once in the book. The author refers to the Territory as a land of his own invention—"and let everyone look for it wherever they wish." The Territory is a place where one finds not only gold, but also the ultimate meaning of one's existence on Earth; where strong and courageous people are granted the opportunity to know the "beauty and harshness of the real world"; where, entering into a fierce confrontation with nature, they live as "a man and a human being ought to live."
