"Captain Blood" (1922) is the most popular novel by English author Rafael Sabatini (1875–1950), which became a true classic of historical adventure literature and brought its creator worldwide fame. Its protagonist, Peter Blood, a physician by profession who is accused of high treason for aiding a rebel and sentenced to penal servitude in the West Indies, makes his escape by audaciously seizing a Spanish galleon, and soon becomes a legendary pirate captain and the terror of the Caribbean. The image of Blood created by Sabatini—a man who becomes a pirate by fate's decree but never loses his honor and dignity—is far from the stereotypical depictions of noble brigands, and the atmosphere recreated in the novel is much closer to reality than it might seem at first glance.
