Once upon a time in the rich city of Veliky Novgorod lived a fine young man named Sadko, also known as Sadko the Minstrel. He was such a skilled musician that both common folk and nobles would listen to him in awe. The Water Spirit of Lake Ilmen himself rewarded him for his wondrous playing, making him a wealthy merchant. Sadko began to trade, increasing his riches, and sailed across the sea—only to be taken captive by the Sea King himself, who had grown very fond of Sadko the Minstrel's playing.
He might have remained in captivity if not for the help of his old friend, the Water Spirit of Lake Ilmen. What did he come up with?
This Russian folk epic was retold for children by the renowned scholar, collector of Russian folklore, and wonderful writer Alexander Nechaev, and illustrated in a style reminiscent of ancient Russian chronicles by Vladimir Pertsov.
