Eleven-year-old War dreams of spending his summer alone, in his own world—the world of medieval knights and castles. But his parents sign him up for the "Recreation" city day camp, where he will have to spend his time in "meaningful social interaction with other children." So-called "normal" children. It couldn't be worse!
But on the very first day, War discovers the ruins of an abandoned church next to the camp, which would make a perfect castle. He also meets the mysterious and stubborn Jolene, who is determined to start a papaya plantation right there on the vacant lot.
War and Jolene are very different, but they have one thing in common: they both desperately need a refuge. And when it is threatened, War consults the Knight's Code: Whenever you are faced with injustice, do battle against it.
But what does it mean to be a knight in real life? And what can two children do?
