In his previous novel ("Red Cross", 2017), Sasha Filipenko made extensive use of real historical documents. In his new work, the reality depicted itself claims the role of a document of the era. For the most skeptical: there is nothing invented here. There is a small town where the main industry is a prison. There is an orphanage where a glimmer of happiness crossed the lives of its inhabitants. The situations, characters, dialogues, and even the police torture methods are all taken from real life. And the cursed question about the price of good, which for some reason turns into evil, is also posed by life itself. Or rather, by death.
"Sasha Filipenko is one of those young authors who immediately became serious writers. If you want to know what modern young Russia is thinking about, read Filipenko" (Svetlana Alexievich).
