The Silver Age... An astonishing period in the history of national culture that began in the late 19th century and was interrupted by the October Revolution. It was a time of intellectual insights and social upheavals that resonated widely in art and literature. Alongside masterpieces by Alexander Blok and Anna Akhmatova, Sergei Yesenin and Marina Tsvetaeva, the reader will find in this collection poems by dozens of other masters of verse—from the philosopher Vladimir Solovyov to the eccentric and ego-futurist Konstantin Olympov. Before you is a kind of lyrical diary of an era which, in the words of Nikolai Otsup, "in terms of its power and energy, as well as its abundance of amazing creations, has almost no analogy in the West: it is as if phenomena that in France, for example, occupied the entire nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, were compressed into three decades." The edition is accompanied by a detailed preface by the critic and literary historian Valery Shubinsky.
