"Shirley" is a passionate account of the conflict between generations, genders, and social classes, in which love stories are closely intertwined with harsh reality. Mill owner Robert Moore intends to marry the wealthy heiress Shirley, even though his heart belongs to the penniless Caroline, while Shirley herself is in love with Robert's brother, an impoverished tutor. Will there be a happy ending?
Charlotte Brontë wrote "Shirley" during a difficult time in her life: her brother Branwell and two sisters, Emily and Anne, had died of tuberculosis. The novel was published in 1849 under the pseudonym Currer Bell. The book's resounding success forced the author to reveal her true identity and brought her to the attention of London's literary circles. In her novel, Charlotte turned to the turn of the century, to the Luddite uprisings—participants in spontaneous protests against the introduction of machinery during the Industrial Revolution in England.
