Katka is ashamed of her weight and buries herself in books to avoid interacting with people. Her mother does not accept Katka's appearance and only praises her daughter when she restricts her food intake and exercises. Katka, meanwhile, eats sweets in secret.
Franta is infuriated that people see him as a "cripple on crutches," so he often instigates fights and films them on the sly. His mother and stepfather don't know how to find common ground with Franta: he does everything out of spite.
This is the story of four children who, each in their own way, come to terms with their quirks and try to fit into a society where being different, being strange, is not considered normal.
