Once, Mayakovsky had the chance to visit the oldest Russian lighthouse in Crimea, Ai-Todor. He was so impressed by what he saw ("Up top, a great lantern – bright as a conflagration") that he wrote this poem for children.
Most often, poets and writers write about sea adventures or seaside vacations. But Vladimir Mayakovsky wrote with enthusiasm and respect about the work of those in maritime professions – captains and lighthouse keepers.
The poem is written in his energetic "stepped" style, and its crisp rhythm is well-suited for reading aloud and memorization.
One of the best children's book artists, Naum Zeitlin, created vivid illustrations for the poem, full of maritime romance.
