Rita is looking forward to her tenth birthday with tremulous joy. She lives with her mother, Julia, on the shores of Lake Pihil in Little Venice, a suburb of Berlin. It's a wonderful spot, perfect for a wonderful party. She could organize a sailing regatta with a treasure hunt. Rita also dreams of a giant, life-sized marzipan cake. And her dad is coming to visit from his home in Spain.
But then everything goes differently, and other guests appear in the house: her mother's new boyfriend with his three troublesome sons. And to make matters worse, one of them has the same birthday as Rita! It becomes clear to her: she must get rid of them! But all the pranks Rita plots against the boys backfire on her. The only place of refuge for her is the floating cafe "Old Love," where the owner, a long-time family friend, makes delicious smoked fish sandwiches.
