Vasily Aksyonov: Generations of Winter

Vasily Pavlovich Aksyonov is an acknowledged classic and a cult figure of Russian literature. His works are well known not only in Russia but also abroad. Success came to Aksyonov as early as the 1960s—by responding to the most complex and pressing issues with brilliant prose, he remained the voice of his generation for many decades. Among the works beloved by readers is the trilogy "Moscow Saga," written in the early 1990s and adapted for the screen in 2004. The trilogy consists of the novels "Generation of Winter," "War and Prison," and "Prison and Peace." Their action covers perhaps the most terrifying period in 20th-century Russian history, from the early 1920s to the early 1950s. The Gradov family, three generations of Russian intellectuals, goes through all the circles of hell of the Stalinist era: the struggle against Trotskyism, collectivization, the camps, the war against fascism, and the post-war repressions.
