For 10-year-old Vika, summer is a little life spent at the dacha with her grandfather. He’s the one who lights the sauna, takes her for a breezy car ride, and orchestrates a backyard rainstorm with a garden hose or a sea voyage in... the bathtub! And who else would think to go cloud-gazing for whimsical shapes or teach her how to spit watermelon seeds!
It is a story full of bright, carefree laughter and the happiness found in little everyday things. At the same time, it is filled with a gentle sadness, because this story is about the difficult subject of saying goodbye to a loved one. Of letting them go to a place from which they can send you a greeting in the form of an apple thrown long ago, which you will one day catch.
The tone and atmosphere of the book are brilliantly captured in the illustrations by talented artist Lera House.
