"The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" (1831) is a famous historical novel by Hugo. It is precisely because of its publication that we are able to admire one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world, located in the very heart of Paris. Hugo drew attention to the cathedral through his work, and he did so intentionally, as Notre-Dame was slated for demolition. The author made no secret of the fact that the main character of his novel is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame itself. However, the reader will undoubtedly remember the vivid characters of this book: the beautiful Gypsy Esmeralda, the noble and kind-hearted deformed Quasimodo, the treacherous priest tormented by forbidden feelings for Esmeralda, and many others. For nearly two centuries, the tambourine of the Gypsy has echoed in the ears of the men who loved her. The theme of unrequited love is as eternal as this book.
