The main characters of the story are two namesakes, both named Shustrik. One is a nimble and strong Murrlik, while the other is an awkward but curious Kurlik with three feathers in his tail. One is a predator, the other, prey.
These seemingly different characters soon find common ground and gradually become true friends. They complement each other, much like Jeeves and Wooster. No matter what trouble the Kurlik gets into, the vigilant Murrlik is always there to save the day. When the Kurlik fell into the river, the Murrlik didn't hesitate to dive into the rapids after him. During their forced journey, the two Shustrik friends had to endure many trials and learn several important life lessons.
The author has populated the book not only with Kurliks and Murrliks but also with other fantastical creatures: elephant-zebrins, crocodavels, and wolf-fluffs. Even the most dangerous, fang-bearing beasts in this tale, written according to the rules of classic situation comedy, turn out not to be so evil after all. It’s just that each one requires a special approach, which is exactly what our brave and resourceful heroes manage to find. They try everything: solving riddles, putting together a forest choir, and even organizing a real rescue mission!
