Vladimir Dal devoted his life to the creation of the Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language. For half a century he collected Russian words, proverbs, sayings and, of course, Tales. It was said that Vladimir Dal alone "recorded more fairy tales than the entire geographical society."
The scientist decided to publish collections of fairy tales for children already in old age and dedicated them to his grandchildren. The books were called like this: "The first first book for a semi-literate grandson" and "The first book is different. For a literate grandson with an illiterate brethren." From these books, children learned about the girl Snegurochka, the mischievous crow, the toothy mouse and the rich sparrow, the thieving goat and the stupid sheep.
Seven fairy tales are included in this book: The Snow Maiden girl, About the woodpecker, You have your own mind, The best singer, What does leisure mean, Crow, About a toothy mouse and about a rich sparrow.
