Vladimir Alekseyevich Gilyarovsky was a Russian writer, journalist, local historian, a Moscow legend and its chronicler, and the author of the famous book "Moscow and Muscovites" (1934), which is undoubtedly the most colorful history ever told about this city. For his kindness and responsiveness, he was called "Uncle Gilyai," and for his talent as a journalist—the "king of reporting." In his articles, essays, and memoirs, Gilyarovsky captured the everyday life of Russia in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries: thanks to these invaluable eyewitness accounts, the memory of the past of Moscow, the Moscow region, and the Russian provinces has been preserved. In addition to "Moscow and Muscovites," this volume includes the books "My Wanderings" (1928), "Friends and Meetings" (1934), and "Theater People" (1941), in which the author vividly and engagingly recounts his experiences—the joys, sorrows, trials, and encounters.
