Vladimir Pavlovich Gurkin (1951-2010) was a renowned playwright and screenwriter, author of the play "Love and Doves," which served as the basis for one of the most famous and beloved films in Russia. Vladimir Gurkin was born in the Perm region to a tractor driver's family. In 1971, he graduated from the acting department of the Irkutsk Theater School, and in 1983 he moved to Moscow, where he worked at the Sovremennik Theatre and the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre. His very first play, "Andryusha" (later titled "Lighting a Candle During the Day..."), was a great success, though it was banned by the authorities in 1980. In total, Vladimir Gurkin wrote eight plays, which continue to be staged in theaters across Russia. "Gurkin largely emerged from Shukshin," actor Sergei Yursky wrote of him. "This is our life, our people, we recognize them, this is us!"
