Yasunari Kawabata is an outstanding Japanese writer and the first Japanese laureate of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The book is based on a real event – the six-month-long "farewell match" of the great Meijin Honinbo Shusai, a master of the game of Go, against a promising young opponent. The concise and elegant "Snow Country" is rightfully considered a classic of Japanese literature and is among the three works specifically cited when Kawabata was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968. Yasunari Kawabata called "The Master of Go," published in 1951, his best work.
