Harry Hole, a charismatic Nordic detective, investigates a murder in a dark horror-thriller where the disappearance of people becomes a key element. For several years, on the day the first snow falls, married women have been vanishing without a trace in Norway. An innocent children's game of building a snowman turns into a nightmare, and for Harry, the pursuit of a serial killer becomes a hunt for a shadow. The criminal seems to be taunting the chief inspector, taking on ever-new guises.
