Max Otto von Stierlitz (Colonel Maxim Maximovich Isaev) won the hearts of millions of readers and became a true folk hero. Jokes are told about him, and people continue to debate his prototypes. For many years, Yulian Semyonov received letters from readers addressed to: "Moscow, Union of Writers, to Semyonov for Isaev-Stierlitz." Different people, of different ages, nationalities, and tastes, Semyonov recalled, asked for Maxim Maximovich Isaev's address so they could begin corresponding with him. The novel "Seventeen Moments of Spring" was published in 1970, and a screen adaptation followed just three years later, with a screenplay also written by Yulian Semyonov. The television film was a resounding success and remains a hit of Russian cinema to this day.
