The French writer Georges Simenon is known to the whole world as the creator of one of the most charming detectives of the 20th century — Commissioner Maigret. However, besides the stories about the phlegmatic Parisian commissioner, Simenon wrote a multitude of novels and novellas in a wide variety of genres. This edition includes two remarkable works, marked by the stamp of genuine literary mastery, which can be attributed to the psychological novel genre.
The novel "Dirty Snow," perhaps Simenon's deepest and most ambiguous work, tells the story of a nineteen-year-old murderer living in a city occupied by enemy troops. "In the novel 'Dirty Snow'," the author wrote, "I wanted to describe the vileness inherent in an occupation and the influence it could have on a young man with his thirst for life... I wanted to see how low he could fall and how he would manage to crawl out of the mud."
The novel "The Prime Minister" is about the voluntary exile that the protagonist embarks upon after a political failure. He dictates his memoirs to a secretary, listens with hidden joy to news about the crisis in the country, and tries to cope with the ghosts of the past that plague him.
