José Saramago is one of contemporary Portugal's greatest writers, the 1998 Nobel Prize laureate in literature, and author of the scandalously famous "The Gospel According to Jesus Christ." "The Cavern" is the last of his novels that had remained untranslated into Russian until now.
Cipriano Algor is sixty-four years old and a potter by trade. He lives with his daughter, Marta, and her husband, Marçal, who works as a guard at a gargantuan commercial organization known as the Center. When the Center refuses to buy any more of Cipriano's bowls and pots, he decides to start making clay dolls—and suddenly the Center's purchasing department places an order for a huge batch, two hundred of each model. Then, Marçal is transferred from the external security team to the internal one, and the whole family moves into the Center. But one night, Cipriano hears the sound of mysterious machinery seemingly coming from underground and decides to get to the bottom of it at any cost…
