This is one of Jules Verne’s lesser-known novels. While writing it, the author frequently referred to the works of the Scottish missionary David Livingstone, who was famous for his research activities.
A geodetic expedition consisting of three Russian and three English scientists sets off for South Africa for scientific research. A conflict brews between them along the way, and news suddenly received about the outbreak of hostilities between Russia and England further exacerbates the situation, leading to a final split of the expedition into two parts: Russian and English. Many difficulties await the heroes: a journey through the jungle, hunting wild animals, crossing the desert, a Bushman uprising, attacks by bandits... During the siege of a fortress where the Russians have taken refuge, the English scientists come to their aid, forgetting their feud - and the team is reunited once again in the face of common danger. But the incredible adventures of the heroes do not end there...
