Lampeshka is about 10 years old, she lives with her one-legged father at the lighthouse. Every evening the girl climbs the steps and lights the lighthouse fire, it seems like her duty, but at the same time it is not really her responsibility. The caretaker is the father, and Lampeshka simply cannot help but help him. And then one day the house runs out of matches, Lampeshka forgot to buy them on time, and as luck would have it, on this day the twilight thickens extremely quickly and a severe storm begins. And the lighthouse does not light. Trouble does not take long to appear: a ship crashes on the rocks in the bay. Whose fault is it - Lampeshka, who did not go to the store for matches in advance, or her father, who was supposed to check on this? It does not matter whose. The ship cannot be returned, and the city demands compensation for damages.
The father is locked in a lighthouse, where he will work for free for the rest of his life, and the daughter is sent as a servant in a wealthy but very gloomy house, about which rumors go around the city that a monster lives in it. And so the lonely girl with her things tied in a small bundle finds herself in this terrible place, where she will have to work for seven years. Is it terrible for her to live here? Well, in general, it’s not that bad: there are other servants here, quite kind people, she has a clean room, the work is also not bad - ordinary household chores, there is even a day off. once a week. But the house clearly hides a secret, which they are in no hurry to let Lampeshka in on, but she still finds out...
A strange creature lives in the tower at the top, evil, aggressive, but weak. Instead of legs, he has a fish tail, and therefore he cannot boast of agility. If you go to him and stay a little longer than you should, he will be rude, pounce, bite, but nothing more. He does not pull on a full-fledged monster. And Lampeshka decides to talk to him. Ryb - that's what she calls the boy, and this is a boy, her age - is well educated, smart and embittered at the whole world. He calls his tail a spike, believes that someday it will become ordinary legs if he does the most difficult, painful exercises every day. Ryb is the son of the owner of the house, and the owner is none other than an admiral. An admiral who lost his ship because of a faulty lighthouse. An admiral who is ashamed of his son. An admiral who many years ago brought back from a voyage a young, beautiful wife with a tail instead of legs.
