We live in a world of things (there are very few Perelmans among us who do not need earthly goods, so we do not take them into account). Some people need expensive clothes, some need travel, others need concerts, books, music, sports, many women are ready to spend all available funds on personal care. Children love toys, sweets, entertainment. Money is needed for everything, even for the most spiritual food (tickets to the Nutcracker, yeah!). We have been told for so long that money is not the most important thing, one can even say that the subtext was "money is bad." Materialism was stigmatized, and the population stood in lines and resorted to all sorts of tricks to get the desired things. And then it suddenly turned out that money is almost the most important thing, in any case, it is one of the few components of a happy life.
We are sometimes surprised by the attitude of modern children to things: it is difficult to surprise them with gifts, they do not take care of toys, and they still choose sweets! How? How can candy be tasteless?! When I was a child, I was happy with any candy, I ate the instant drink "Yupi" dry with a spoon, because it was sweet, and if my mother had offered to buy me a car in "Detsky Mir", I would have agreed, because in any case it is a toy, that is, by definition, a useful thing! Our parents and we together with them could stand in line for several hours for boots that had to be worn carefully for a couple of seasons, so that later they could be passed on to a younger sister in almost pristine condition, and modern children destroy shoes in a month so that all that remains is to throw them away. Clothes are torn and dirty every day, toys are mercilessly broken and lost, sweets are a logical conclusion to any meal, and not a holiday once every six months. For our children, this is a given, they have never known anything else since birth. They can calmly play in the mud and not be afraid of tearing their pants because everyone has plenty of clothes, they don't tremble over toys, they don't envy each other because everyone has more or less everything. They just live and enjoy life, not worrying about trifles. So who is more materialistic: the generation that dreams of sausage on holidays, or the generation that grew up surrounded by all sorts of excesses and doesn't pay much attention to them? But there are no such things as too many books - this has always been the case!
