Alexandre Dumas's brilliant "The Count of Monte Cristo" is rightly considered one of the most popular novels in world literature. Sequels have been written for it, it has been adapted for the stage, made into musicals and films, and to this day, countless editions of this book continue to delight new generations of readers. The story of a young Parisian, whom friends jokingly had imprisoned, was drawn by the author from the Paris police archives. And from the master's pen emerges the sailor Edmond Dantès, the prisoner of the Château d'If. Finding no justice, he decides to take matters into his own hands and exacts cruel revenge on the enemies who destroyed his happiness.
In this edition, the text is accompanied for the first time in Russian by illustrations by Czech artists Stanislav Hudeček and Věnceslav Černý. The edition also includes the story of the shoemaker François Picaud, taken from criminal records, which served as the prototype for Alexandre Dumas's immortal creation.
