Seven-year-old Madiken lives in a big red house near the river. There is no better place than this in the whole world, she believes. Mom and dad, assistant Alva and baby Pims also live there, who follows her older sister everywhere and everywhere. Where one is, there is another. Together they always have fun. And how could it be otherwise! After all, there are so many interesting things here: you can swim, swing on a swing, play croquet, water the garden and give hedgehog milk to drink!
And yet how difficult it is to be an obedient girl! Madiken and Pims just can't do it! Both are quick to mischief: either they fall into the hole, or they stick a pea in their nose. But one day something happened that is scary to remember ...

The events described in this book are very reminiscent of those that occurred in the childhood of Astrid Lindgren herself. And she even endowed one of the heroines with her own habits and character traits. The book is permeated with humor and subtle irony, which turn the most mundane episodes into a gripping narrative.
