John Milton was born into the family of a London notary. Having graduated from Cambridge and mastered both ancient and modern languages to perfection, Milton became one of the most educated men of his time. He lived a tumultuous life, devoting himself to scholarly pursuits, politics, and religion, yet his name has remained through the ages thanks to his poetry, and primarily the poem "Paradise Lost," first published in 1667. This epic drama, comparable in scale to the works of Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Shakespeare, has become one of the greatest works of English literature. In this edition, "Paradise Lost" is printed in the translation by Arkady Steinberg and is accompanied by the complete set of classic illustrations by Gustave Doré.
The book also includes the poem "Paradise Regained," based on the New Testament episode of the temptation of Christ by Satan, the tragedy "Samson Agonistes," and the finest examples of Milton's lyric poetry. In addition to Doré's illustrations, the edition includes illustrations by William Harvey, George Wharton Edwards, and Arthur Rackham (color engravings for the elegant pastoral "Comus"), which have never before been published in Russia. The texts are accompanied by detailed notes by the prominent literary scholar and specialist in foreign literature, Andrey Nikolayevich Gorbunov.
