The book includes two fantastic stories - "The Heart of a Dog" and "Fatal Eggs", united by the theme of the scientist's moral responsibility for the experiment, as well as stories and feuilletons written in the period 1922-1924. In these short essays, Bulgakov, with brilliant wit, paints pictures of post-revolutionary life for the reader: the birth of NEP, the new revolutionary art in the theater, the opening of the First Agricultural Exhibition, the housing crisis that the writer experienced firsthand. Describing the modern life of the capital and the customs of Muscovites, Bulgakov ruthlessly exposes human greed, selfishness and indifference, but is always full of sympathy for people who are forced to resist the growing bureaucracy and the oppressive atmosphere of philistinism.
