The work of Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin is often called "a satirical encyclopedia of Russian life."
In the novel "The History of a City" the writer ridicules the vices of the Russian society of the 19th century, reveals the typical features of bureaucratic officials. "The history of one city" is, in essence, a satirical history of Russian society in the second half of the past and at the beginning of this century, set out in the form of a comic description of the city of Glupov and the chiefs who consistently ruled it ... "wrote I.S. Turgenev.
The tales of Saltykov-Shchedrin also generalize and grotesquely recreate the contemporary society of the writer. In "The Tale of How One Man Feeded Two Generals," the theme of bureaucratic arbitrariness, the inability of bureaucrats-generals to work, and the desire to live at someone else's expense, is raised. In the fairy tale "The Wise Gudgeon" Saltykov-Shchedrin denounces the cowardice and political opportunism of part of the intelligentsia after the defeat of the revolutionary organization "Narodnaya Volya".
