The Widdershins sisters live on Ravenstone - like all the relatives of prisoners in the local prison. They are taken care of by a strict grandmother who forces them to help in the tavern. The world of girls seems to be closed on a small island, where every day is similar to the previous one.
But the middle sister - Betty - is not enough. She collects maps of distant lands and dreams of traveling. Right on the eve of Halloween and on her thirteenth birthday, Betty decides to hit the road.
