For three centuries now, in any Chinese bookstore, one can find a collection of stories by Pu Songling, where amazing tales await the reader: about fox spirits, sorcerers and ghosts, strange animals, cursed mirrors, talking birds, paintings that come to life, and much, much more. In reality, Pu Songling's books have long transcended the borders of China and are now read all over the world in all major languages. Their author was a scholar with a Confucian upbringing and, strictly speaking, it was not at all appropriate for him to write stories containing all sorts of wonders and erotic motifs. However, Pu Songling became famous precisely for such books, becoming the most renowned Chinese writer of his time. Folk parables served as the foundation for his work, but over time, the author's stories themselves turned into folklore and were passed from mouth to mouth by simple storytellers.
This edition publishes all four collections of Pu Songling's stories that have been released in Russian, in wonderful translations by the Sinologist Vasily Mikhailovich Alekseev, with detailed notes and original Chinese engravings.
