Charlotte Brontë’s literary legacy has become a treasure of English culture, gaining recognition far beyond England. Her novel "Jane Eyre," which remains one of the most popular works of the 19th century to this day, met with particular success. This edition includes two of Charlotte Brontë's equally captivating novels: "Shirley" and "Villette."
Published in 1849, the novel "Shirley" was an immediate success. It tells the story of two friends with very different characters: Caroline, a sweet, dreamy girl from a clerical family, and the brilliant, strong-willed aristocrat Shirley.
Published in 1853, "Villette" was written during a difficult period for the author, overshadowed by the untimely deaths of her brother and both sisters, Emily and Anne. Its main character, Lucy Snowe, in her quest for independence, seeks a position as a teacher at a boarding school for young ladies located in a small town.
The texts are accompanied by illustrations from original 19th-century English editions.
