"For those of you who don't know me, let me say right away that I am not a human. I am an anthropoid ape. How I ended up among humans, I do not know. And most likely, I never will. I have learned to understand how you think, I have learned to understand your speech. I know what theft and betrayal are. What greed is. And cruelty. I have had many masters, and most of them I would prefer to forget."
Captain "The Chief" and the gorilla Sally Jones travel aboard the ship Hudson Queen, earning their living by transporting cargo. Sally Jones works as a mechanic and has a brilliant understanding of the ship's machinery. She understands human speech and has even mastered the skill of writing, but she cannot speak. Smugglers accuse The Chief of murder, and he ends up in prison. Sally Jones believes in the captain's innocence and must prove it. Thus begins a long and thorny, at times agonizing, and sometimes amusing journey, the goal of which is to save The Chief.
