The book tells about the troublesome New Year's Eve days of Santa Claus, who is preparing a Christmas tree and gifts. Aunt Zima, Snegurochka, funny boy Egor-Naperekor and baby New Year help him.
The story is almost detective: there is a sled scooter, and a difficult story of searching for a beautiful Christmas tree, and a chase, and the villain Nightingale the Robber, who intrigues, but receives a well-deserved punishment for this, and the magical transformation of Santa Claus into Ivan Tsarevich (and back) with the help of boilers with young and old water, and a merry feast in the palace.
The fairy tale ends with an exceptionally humane act of Santa Claus, who, as it turns out, back in 1958 was concerned about the preservation of forests. He returns the Christmas tree to its old place, freezes it to the stump, and the Christmas tree continues to grow as if nothing had happened, remembering from time to time about the holiday and its luxurious New Year's dress.
