Jaume Cabré: Confiteor

The novel's protagonist, Adrià Ardèvol, a musician, art expert, and polyglot, re-examines his life before an invisible broom sweeps all events from his memory one by one. He recalls his childhood, the loving care of his nanny Lola, his cold and pragmatic mother, and his erudite father with his mysterious fate. The most valuable treasure in his father's antique shop was an old Storioni violin, which was shadowed by an ancient crime. However, it turns out that the story of Adrià's life cannot be reduced to a few decades; it all began many centuries ago in the Catalan monastery of Sant Pere del Burgal, and the sounds of the fantastically perfect violin, crafted by a Cremonese master, magically transform human destinies. Ultimately, the protagonist's world is flooded with dark secrets and mystical enigmas, the resolution of which will take years.
